

Lester James Evans, a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on April 3, 1934, Lester was deeply rooted in the community he loved and proudly called home for his entire life.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life and devoted wife of more than 65 years, Frances Nunez Evans “Sweet Lips”; his parents, Myrtle and Raymond Evans; his brother, Donald Evans Sr.; and his sisters, Judy Evans Gutierrez and Joyce Evans Serpas.
He leaves behind his loving children, Debra Evans Matrana (Anthony), Teco Evans (Cheryl), and Tracey Evans, Sr. (Laurie).
He was the proud grandfather of Jeffrey Matrana (Laura), Tiffany Matrana Bryan (Anthony), Misty Evans Rodrigue (Chris), Callie Evans Constant (Chuck), Tracey Evans, Jr., and Jamie Evans (Troy).
He was also blessed with cherished great-grandchildren: Emmett, Graham, Dylan, Caden, Lily, Cullen, Rylee, Lainie, Luke, Jude, Tory, Tristan, and Talon. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
A devoted member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Lester was a fisherman through and through. For many years, he made his living on the water aboard his beloved boat, “Captain Swampy.” Lester lived a life built on hard work, resilience, and devotion to his family, always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed him.
His family finds peace in knowing he is reunited with Frances, the love of his life. Though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the stories he gave, and the love he shared will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew him.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation at St. Bernard Catholic Church located at 2805 Bayou Road, St. Bernard, LA 70085 on Thursday, May 14th from 10:00AM – 12:00PM, followed by a Funeral Mass beginning at 12:00PM. Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery.
Join us for a celebration of Captain Swampy’s life with food and drinks at Iverson Hall, next to the church, following interment.
