Lionel Bernard Serpas Sr.

Lionel Bernard Serpas, Sr. passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, March 1, 2021. He was 82 years old. He was the beloved husband of Brenda Melerine Serpas, for 62 years. Loving father of Lionel Bernard Serpas, Jr. (Angela Loyacano Serpas), and Kimberly Serpas Gurtner (Stephen Matthew Gurtner). He was the devoted grandfather of Lionel Bernard Serpas, III (Ashlyn), Lainy Ann Serpas, and Stephen Matthew Gurtner, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Loisca B. Serpas, and Clement J. Serpas; and by his brothers, the late Clarence Serpas, Terrance Serpas, Lenny Serpas, and Clement "Bobo" Serpas, Jr. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Lionel was born and raised in Violet, Louisiana. He was a resident of Braithwaite, in Plaquemines Parish, for 36 years before moving back to St. Bernard Parish. He retired from Southern Natural Gas Company after 33 years of service. Lionel was an avid Saints fan and a Saints Season Ticket Holder. One of his fondest memories was his trip to Miami in 2010 to watch the Saints win the Super Bowl. The only thing that rivaled his love for the Saints was the deep love he held for his family, whom he loved with all his heart.

The family would like to extend a debt of gratitude to the doctors and nurses at both Ochsner and Pulse Home Health Agency for their unwavering care and dedication to Lionel in his final days.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. VIRTUE STREET, in Chalmette, on Friday, March 12, 2021, from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. A Memorial Mass will be held in his honor at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery. Please be mindful that facial coverings must be worn, and physical distancing is encouraged, at all times while inside the funeral home.
