Margie Choina celebrated her 94th birthday in Heaven, albeit a day late simply because she wanted to spend more time surrounded by her 3 children in the Chalmette home she loved so dearly. Margie was born in New Orleans on January 29, 1922 and was given the name Mary Margaret by her late father, Anthony Joseph Rogers, and mother, Louise Maury Rogers. The name did not appeal to her so she changed it to Marguerite. Everyone else preferred Mickie, Marge or Margie.
At age 29, she married the late Lawrence (L.A.) in St. Louis Cathedral Church. They were married for 37 years and had 3 adorable children -- Wayne Anthony Choina (Phyllis), Debbie Ann Choina (Gary) and Susan Marie Stassi (Bob). In the early 1950’s, her family moved from New Orleans to Chalmette, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Being a Catholic, her family became parishoners of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church, where her children attended its school for 9 years. After her husband’s death, Margie lived with her mom, 2 younger siblings, Mabel Rogers Gunter, and Anthony Joseph Rogers, Jr., until they passed.
Margie worked for Bell South as a telephone operator during her younger years. She enjoyed cooking, reading romantic novels and playing dominoes with her good friends from Chalmette Baptist Church. Most of all, she loved to catch beads while attending the Mardi Gras parades.
Maw Maw Margie adored her 2 grandchildren, Reshelle Marino (Joe) and Aaron Ruiz and was able to enjoy her 4th generation great-grandchildren, Angelena Marguerite Marino and Joseph Anthony Marino.
Margie was a quiet, humble, unselfish, generous and loving homemaker who cherished her entire family and friends. Her greatest accomplishment was raising her children, who made her very proud and filled her life with happiness. She loved them unconditionally. And she also loved her cat, Rosebud.
Her family wholeheartedly wishes to thank everyone who lovingly cared for her during her illness with Alzheimer’s, especially her son-in-law (Gary), son-in-law (Bob), daughter in-law (Phyllis), Matt and Chris, and caretakers (Steven and Queen).
Margie will be greatly missed by her family and friends. But for now, she is following the path God laid for her. He set her free to live with Him.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Margie Choina, www.alz.org.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Margie’s life to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on February 4, 2016 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM. She will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
