Mercedes “Des” V. Caluda passed away peacefully on Monday, September 22, 2025 at the age of 91. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that were so dear to her. She was the cherished wife of 68 years to the late Daniel S. Caluda Sr. Loving mother of Janice Caluda Perdue (Preston), Danny Caluda (Jodie), Linda Caluda Jackson and Connie Caluda Brown (Mike). Daughter of the late George & Eloise Villanueva. Sister of the late George Villanueva and Lanny Villanueva. Grandmother of the late Jonathan Caluda. She is also survived and fondly remembered by her 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Des was born in Violet, LA and spent her life surrounded by the beauty and communities of Violet and Braithwaite. A devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to so many wonderful people, Des lived her life through the simple, joyful moments that kept her close to the people she loved.
Whether it was sharing a meal with family and friends, enjoying a lucky day at the casino playing her favorite slot machines or diving into a challenging puzzle, Des found happiness in her simple pleasures. Her fondness for cooking was well known, but even that paled in comparison to the deep love she held for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who she delighted in spoiling.
Des had a special way of making holidays feel warmer and more memorable with her homemade pecan logs and banana nut bread. She cherished family gatherings, where laughter was as abundant as the stories that were shared and food that was enjoyed. Her loyalty, compassion and dedication to her loved ones were the foundation of everything she did. She will be remembered not just for her beautiful laugh and warm spirit, but for the special way she made others feel when around her. Des was a quiet example of how to live with grace, kindness and a generous heart.
Rest in peace, dear Des. You taught us that faith, hope and love can do amazing things. Although you will be so deeply missed, your loving spirit will live on in each of us who were lucky enough to know you.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2621 Colonial Blvd, Violet, LA on Tuesday, September 30th from 9:30AM – 12:00PM, followed by a Funeral Mass in Des’ memory beginning at 12:00PM. She will be laid to eternal rest with her beloved Daniel, in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery. In memory of Des, please consider making a donation to the charity of your choice.
