

Nick John Genova, a decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy who proudly served our country during World War II, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 13, 2023 at the age of 98. He was the beloved husband of 63 years to the late Hortense Trahan Genova. Loving father of Nick Genova Jr. (Darlene), Ronald Genova (Helen) and Gail Genova Serpas (Bullet). Son of the late John Genova and Frances Glaviano Genova. Brother of the late Joseph Genova, Rosie Lena, Mary Michel, Gertrude Parino, Tony Genova, James Genova and Victoria Black. Proud grandfather of Nicole Genova, Kelly Ellison, Macie Genova, Tina Mayer, Tracey Dudenhefer, Shelly Serpas and Troy Serpas. Great grandfather of Parker Ellison, Owen Ellison, Jackson Dudenhefer, Allison Dudenhefer, Jared Serpas, Samantha Cameron, Troy Serpas Jr. and Hailey Serpas. He is also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Nick was born in Cottonport, LA and was a longtime resident of Chalmette, LA. Following the devastation of hurricane Katrina, Nick moved to Independence, LA where he enjoyed the company of his new neighbors for 17 years. He spent his final year with family and friends in Slidell, LA. Nick was born in 1925 and grew up during a time when the world was in turmoil. At the age of 17, he answered the call to duty and joined the United States Navy during World War II. His dedication and bravery during the war earned him numerous decorations and the gratitude of a nation. He was not only a hero on the battlefield but a symbol of the strength and resilience of the Greatest Generation.
Beyond his wartime service, Nick was a man who appreciated life's simple pleasures. He found joy in the everyday, whether it was meticulously cutting the grass, watching it grow, or tending to his vegetable garden. His tomatoes were renowned, and his family cherished the delicious fruits of his labor.
Nick's passion for storytelling was renowned, and he had a unique talent for transporting his family and friends into laughter and surprise. His experiences while employed by the Corps of Engineers provided him with a treasure trove of stories, and he was an excellent teller of sometimes tall tales.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Nick was a lifelong learner, always eager to acquire new knowledge. He possessed many leadership qualities that endeared him to those around him and those he worked with and served with. Nick's faith was an integral part of his life, and he served as the head usher at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church. His commitment to his country, his community, his church and his family was unwavering.
Nick's legacy lives on in the hearts of his loved ones, in the stories he shared, in the gardens he tended, and in the lives he touched. He leaves behind a grateful nation, a loving family, and a community enriched by his presence. As we say our final goodbyes, we remember Nick with profound respect and gratitude for a life well-lived.
Rest in peace, dear Nick. You will forever be remembered as a hero, a storyteller, and a man of unwavering faith.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Tuesday, October 17th from 9:00AM – 11:00AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church, 2320 Paris Rd., Chalmette, LA beginning at 12:00PM. Nick will be laid to eternal rest with his beloved wife Hortense in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
