Sandra Lea Smith

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sandra Lea Smith, who departed this life peacefully on April 19, 2025, at the age of 81. Sandra was a beacon of warmth, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Born in New Orleans, LA on September 28, 1943, Sandra grew up with a love for family values, and she carried that love with her throughout her life. She was known for her unwavering kindness and her ability to make everyone feel welcome in her presence.

Sandra dedicated much of her life to her family, raising her children with compassion and care. She was a devoted mother, a proud grandmother, and a cherished friend. Her home was always open, her table always full, and her heart always giving.

She is survived by her loving Husband Heyward Unbehagen; her daughter Gidget DeRouen; her step-daughter Kelly Unbehagen; and her grandchildren. Sandra is preceded in death her parents Charles Smith and Edna Kholer Smith; and her children Harry Lee DeRouen Jr. and Brenda Acosta. Sandra's light will live on in the lives she touched, and in the memories that will forever bring warmth to our hearts.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation, in her honor, at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue Street, Chalmette, LA 70043 on Thursday, May 8, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Sandra will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
