Suzanne Hemelt Austin passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at the age of 70. Her final days were spent surrounded by her family and friends, remembering the ways she touched their lives during her very memorable life. She was the cherished wife of David J. Austin. Beloved mother of Melissa Thompson, Holly Thompson and Brian Thompson (Adriana). Step-mother of Taryn Chenevert (Phil). Proud grandmother of Maelee Geeck (Henry), Amelia Thompson, Jasper Chenevert and Sofia Thompson. Step-grandmother of Mallory Callahan, Reagan Gomez and Caine Chenevert. Sister of Morris Hemelt Jr., David Hemelt, Milton Hemelt, Randy Hemelt and Gary Hemelt. Daughter of the late Morris Hemelt Sr. and Gloria Cornu Hemelt. She is also survived and fondly remembered by many cousins, relatives and dear friends.
Suzanne was born in New Orleans, LA and was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish before eventually making her home in Covington. She built a long and fulfilling career with Walmart, where she dedicated more than 32 years of her life. Beginning as a Sales Clerk, Suzanne worked her way into management.
She found joy in the simple pleasures of life - dancing, spending time with her family and traveling with David. She had a special way of appreciating the little things and found happiness in the everyday moments shared with the people she loved. She cared deeply for those around her and gave generously of her time, her heart and her love.
She will always be remembered for her loyalty and devotion to her family, her caring and loving spirit, her laughter, and above all, the immense love she had for her children and grandchildren. Her pride in them could be seen in her eyes, felt in her hugs, and heard in the way she spoke their names. Her love was the kind that never needed grand gestures to be understood - it was simply there and unconditional.
She was a wife who loved deeply, a daughter who stood strong, a mother who guided with quiet love, a grandmother who gave her whole heart, and a woman whose presence made life a little richer for everyone fortunate enough to know her. Suzanne leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, kindness and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.
Rest peacefully, dear Suzanne. You were a beautiful example of what it means to love and care for others. You will be missed beyond measure, loved beyond words and remembered in every heart you touched.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Tuesday, October 6th from 9:00AM – 11:00AM, followed by a funeral service in Suzanne’s memory beginning at 11:00AM. She will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
