Walter Henry Gifford passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at the age of 71. He was the beloved father of Courtney Gifford (Lavar) and Taylor Gifford. Son of the late Aaron Gifford and Margaret Robertson Gifford. Brother of Peggy Gifford Melancon (late Ray Melancon), Yvette H. Ecuyer, Salome A. Gifford, Aaron A. Gifford and the late Aaron C. Gifford and Kenny G. Gifford. Extremely proud Grandfather of Cora Johnson. Godfather of Staci Melancon. Former husband of Kim H. Gifford. He is also fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Also loved and respected by cousins, close friends and family along with his brothers and sisters behind the badge, which some referred to him as a hero.
Walter was born in New Orleans, LA and was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish. He dedicated 33 years of service to the New Orleans Police Department, retiring as a detective. Throughout his life, he remained deeply connected to his community as a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, PANO, and the Masonic Lodge. He was also a former member and Past Grand Marshal of the Downtown Irish Club, where his larger-than-life personality and love of tradition left a lasting impression on many.
Retirement did not slow Walter down for long. After taking a few years to enjoy life, he once again got to work, serving as a security officer at Ochsner Baptist. Walter was also well known and deeply respected by the employees of the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel, who referred to him as their “hero” during Hurricane Katrina.
Walter never met a stranger. In his presence, you could always expect a life lesson, a memorable story, and a colorful trip down memory lane. He had a way of making people laugh, feel welcome, and leave with something to remember.
His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Weekend outings were some of his favorite moments, especially when his granddaughter, Cora, got to decide where everyone would eat — most often choosing hibachi. No outing was ever complete without a stop for a snowball afterward. He also eagerly counted down the days until Taylor would return to town, loving every visit. Even the simplest moments brought him happiness, including his beloved trips to Walmart, where he enjoyed strolling down every single aisle.
The family would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to his nurse, Brittany, physical therapist David with Ochsner Eagan Home Health, and Jordan Crosby for the compassionate care, kindness, and assistance they provided to our father during his time of need.
Walter will be remembered for his service, his strength, his stories, his humor, and the deep love he had for his family, his friends and his community. His warmth and presence filled every room.
Rest in peace, our dear Walter. You were our pillar of courage and strength and a wonderful example of what it means to care for others. Although you will be deeply missed, your presence will continue to live on in every story shared, every precious memory, and every heart you touched.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Thursday, May 28th from 11:00AM -1:00PM, followed by a funeral service in Walter’s memory beginning at 1:00PM. He will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
