Billunta C. Carter

With profound sadness and immeasurable love, we celebrate the life of Billunta C. Carter, whose journey touched countless lives across the world. Billunta leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, learning, adventure, and friendship that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Billunta was born in 1978, to Billy and Gloria Carter in Phoenix, Arizona. He received his early education at Tri-City Christian Academy in Tempe, Arizona, and later attended Corona del Sol High School, graduating in May 1996. He continued his academic journey at Arizona State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Geographical Information Systems and Urban Planning in 2003. In 2007, he traveled to Prague, Czechia, where he earned his International Teaching Certification. His commitment to education led him to California State University, Los Angeles, where he received a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in June 2010.

From an early age, Billunta enjoyed accompanying his mother and grandmother to church. He was baptized at First Institutional Baptist Church and Bethlehem Baptist Church in his youth. He remained a member until embarking on his overseas teaching career. Throughout his professional journey, he remained dedicated to lifelong learning and language education, maintaining active involvement with the Japanese Association for Language Teachers and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Billunta was a remarkable man whose smile would light up every room he entered. His warmth, humility, gentle spirit, and genuine care for others drew people to him wherever he went. While naturally thoughtful and reserved, he came alive in the classroom. Teaching was not simply his profession; like his mother, it was his calling. He deeply admired his students and found great joy in helping them discover their potential, overcome challenges, and become the very best versions of themselves. His patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in others left a lasting impact on countless students throughout his career.

Billunta was a citizen of the world. He possessed an adventurous spirit and an insatiable curiosity about life. Whether exploring new countries, immersing himself in different cultures, sampling local cuisines, or building friendships across continents, he embraced every opportunity to learn and connect with others. His travels were not merely about seeing new places but about understanding people and appreciating the richness of the world around him.

Above all else, Billunta cherished relationships. Nothing was more important to him than his family and friends. He had an extraordinary ability to make people feel valued, seen, and appreciated. Each relationship was nurtured through sincerity, loyalty, compassion, and genuine love. He touched countless hearts through his calm presence, welcoming personality, and unwavering willingness to help others.

In 2011, Billunta moved to Japan, where he spent much of his adult life as an Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Studies at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata, Osaka. In 2024, he returned to the United States and taught at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, before relocating to Thailand. There, he served as a Professor at Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University, continuing his passion for teaching and mentoring students until his untimely passing.

Billunta was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Gloria Mae Henderson, grandmother, Bernice Davis, grandmother, Nettie Ree McKinney, aunt, Joann Davis, uncle, Eugene “Big Gene” Davis, aunt, Idle Joyce Posey, and cousin, Peggy Joyce Hilburn.

To cherish his memory he leaves behind his treasured sister, Dayna C. Carter of Lisboa, Portugal; his father and stepmother, Billy and Betty Carter of Ontario, Oregon; his sister, Brittany Manor of Houston, Texas; his stepfather, James Henderson of Chandler, Arizona; his dear friend, Papassorn Patty of Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand; and a host of relatives, lifelong friends, cherished colleagues, former students, and the many lives he touched around the world.

Though his time with us was far too short, Billunta’s legacy lives on through the lessons he taught, the friendships he cultivated, the places he explored, and the love he shared so freely. His smile, his generosity, his adventurous spirit, and his unwavering compassion will remain forever in our hearts.
