Born Carol Mae Leisy on September 30, 1938, in Portland, Oregon, she was the beloved daughter of the late Kenneth and Eva Leisy. A longtime resident of Chandler, Carol lived a life rich in adventure, ambition, and joy, and she was deeply cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Carol’s early years in Portland helped shape her independent spirit and lifelong curiosity. After earning her high school diploma, she embarked on a life marked by diverse accomplishments and meaningful experiences.
Professionally, Carol began her career as a secretary and later became a successful business owner. Her work reflected her strong work ethic, intelligence, and determination. She eventually enjoyed a well-earned retirement, which she approached with the same enthusiasm and purpose that defined her life.
Family was central to Carol’s heart. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Kathy Lirakis (64); her stepson, Bill Douglas (56); her niece, Tina Boomsma (57); and her nephew, Thom Douglas (55). She was also devoted to her beloved animals, including her late bird, Kelly, and her cherished dogs—Pulga, Tuco, Shadow, Kody, Becky, Princess, Lucky Star, and her most precious companion, Kenny—all of whom were deeply loved and enriched by her care.
Carol’s interests were as remarkable as they were wide-ranging. She enjoyed corresponding with friends and loved playing games such as Sequence and Mexican Train. A dedicated and accomplished dog trainer, she achieved obedience training through the utility degree. Ever adventurous, Carol became a certified scuba diver—despite never learning to swim—an achievement that perfectly captured her fearless spirit.
Her passion for aviation led her to earn a private pilot’s license with an instrument rating. At the age of 56, she added yet another extraordinary accomplishment by becoming a national champion roller skater. Carol also loved cooking and took great joy in sharing her talents and meals with others.
In keeping with Carol’s generous heart and lifelong love for animals, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA:
