Carol was born on December 1, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, the only child of Mary and Carl Peterson.
Some of Carol’s fondest memories were her many summers spent as a child, with family and friends, in the Indiana Sand Dunes. Later in life, Carol was honored to be interviewed by a member of the Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center when the Dunes were being redesignated as a national park. It was thrilling for Carol to share her love of a place she held so dear to her heart.
After high school, Carol attended college at Northwestern University and California State University. While attending Northwestern, Carol was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. During her junior year, she attended a fun summer semester in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she met her husband, Rod. He was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Kaneohe Bay.
After the summer semester ended and Carol returned to school, she and Rod kept in touch. They called and wrote letters to one another. Eventually, they were reunited in Fresno, California, where they married in the summer of 1962.
Carol taught 7th grade geography in Fresno and later worked at Wells Fargo Bank History Room in San Francisco. They moved to Arizona in 1965, where Carol taught economics and American history and government at South Mountain High School in Phoenix.
Rod and Carol bought their first home in Tempe, Arizona in 1968. A short time later they started their family, with sons, Steven and Dan. Carol resigned from teaching to become a stay-at-home mom. This was a job she loved and did very well. She was later promoted to grandma. Carol greatly valued education and instilled it's importance in her sons and her grandchildren.
When Steve and Dan got older, Carol rejoined the workforce. She started as a volunteer and was later hired as an employee at the Tempe Historical Museum. Thereafter, she spent 18 years working in the Department of Archives and Special Collections at the Arizona State University Hayden Library. She retired in 2003 and became a volunteer at the Arizona State University Retirees Association (ASURA) office where she was active with the Salt River Alumnae Panhellenic Association.
With a life-long love of learning, Carol graduated from Northwestern University with a B.S. in Secondary Education. Carol was also the first member of the family to letter in a sport: volleyball.
Additionally, Carol received a M.A. degree in history from California State University, Fresno and at age 57, Carol earned a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Arizona.
Carol was a kind, beautiful, intelligent woman who greatly enjoyed serving others and spending time with family. Prior to losing her vision, she loved reading, learning, traveling, playing the piano, wine tasting, snow skiing, volunteering, and attending events of her children and grandchildren. She also loved tailgating and attending the ASU baseball, softball, and football games with Rod and their close friends.
Carol will lovingly be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit and the lasting legacy of love and family.
She is survived by her husband, Rod Moore; two sons, Steve (Susan) Moore and Dan (Dawn) Moore, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life for Carol will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chandler Nature Center: 4050 E. Chandler Heights Road, Chandler, Arizona 85249.
