Clara was a voice of the Disciples. She served as Communications Specialist at the national headquarters of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, a role that reflected her steady professionalism and deep commitment to faith and community. She was a dedicated member of Martindale Avenue Church of Christ in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she was highly esteemed for her active participation in many areas. After making Arizona her home, she and her beloved husband, Leon, became members of Sun Lakes United Methodist Church in Sun Lakes, Arizona.
First and foremost, Clara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt who loved her family and consistently placed them at the center of her life. She had a gift for sharing the day’s events through stories that brought laughter and warmth; with Clara, there was never a dull moment. She was admired by all who met her—someone who never met a stranger, and who seemed, in turn, to be a stranger to none. Her kindness drew people in, and her generous spirit was felt in countless thoughtful gestures. Leon affectionately nicknamed her the unpaid “Community Social Worker,” a tribute to the care she so naturally extended to others.
Clara reflected her beauty and love for fashion with great joy and grace.
Clara truly enjoyed shopping. She took pride in cooking and welcoming others into her home. She was known as an outstanding events planner in the various communities she called home over the years.
Clara is survived by her spouse, Leon; daughters Reverend Carla (Reverend Billy), Paula, Karol, and Tina (Ron); daughter-in-law, Linda; grandchildren William, Katrina, Ronald, Christian (Mayra), and Morgan; great-grandchildren Kayla and Julio; sisters Beverly, Daisy, and Sheila; brother, Charlie; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by sons Lyle and Leon Jr.; parents Hyland and Pauline; sisters Kathryn, Patricia, and Bonita; and brothers Hyland II, William, Edwin, and Donald.
The Daughters of Clara, along with Leon and family, thank God for the precious memories that will be held in their hearts forever, and for the years they were blessed to share with her.
A Celebration of Life service will also be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, at a date to be determined.
