David "Dave" Wayne Fortney

David “Dave” Wayne Fortney, of Scottsdale, Arizona, passed away May 5, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. He was born on December 17, 1957, in Phoenix, Arizona to Adrian and Juanita Fortney. Dave was married to Diane DeRuvo in Phoenix on August 4, 1979. Together they raised four children: Zachary, Megan, Cody and Wyatt.

Dave was an active member in his community. In his early years, Dave was a member of the rotary club while living in Sierra Vista, Arizona. After moving to Scottsdale, Arizona, he joined the Scottsdale Jaycees, an organization that hosts the major community tradition of the Parada del Sol, the Parada del Sol Rodeo where Dave served as “Rodeo Boss” in 1993, as well as several other community efforts.

Dave started coaching baseball in the late 1980s and coached his three sons throughout their high school baseball careers. He coached for Old Scottsdale Youth Baseball and had a field named after him at Pima Elementary School. He began coaching Club Baseball in the early 2000s. Dave became the coach for the Saguaro High School freshman team in 2011, and then the varsity team in 2018, coaching the team during their 2012 and 2024 State Championships.

Dave was an outdoorsman who loved camping, RVing, fishing and hunting. He regularly liked to spend time at his Uncle Gary’s ranch in southern Arizona with his son’s hunting and RVing with his wife whenever possible. He loved to cook and bake and was known among family and friends for his variety of desserts. Most importantly, Dave became “Gramps” to his granddaughter Meyer Lane in 2020, and his grandson Callan Woods in 2022 which was his greatest achievement of all. He was the happiest when he was spending time with the grandkids going to their sports events and swimming classes, celebrating holidays, and camping trips.

Dave was survived by wife Diane Fortney; children Zack Fortney (Kiesha Richardson), Megan Fortney; Cody Fortney (Amanda); Wyatt Fortney; grandchildren Meyer and Callan; brother Artie Thrower (Annette); uncle Gary Graham (Janice); along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Adrian Fortney; mother Juanita Graham; and sister’s Mary and Julie.
