

Derrill grew up in Belleville, Illinois, and Belton, Missouri. He pursued higher education at the University of Missouri and the University of Missouri–Kansas City, earning degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Public Health (MS), and Civil Engineering (PE). His dedication to learning led him to careers with the Missouri Department of Health, the City of San Francisco, and Burns & McDonnell Engineering.
A man of wide ranging interests, Derrill enjoyed sports, travel, hiking, snow skiing, music, and caring for his roses. He carried a lifelong passion for science, nature, history, and taking on new challenges. A teacher at heart, Derrill enjoyed tutoring students in math and science. He was known for a wide range of knowledge and his ability to share something new in every conversation. Derrill also mastered the art of great barbecue, a gift his friends and family especially cherished during holidays and gatherings.
Derrill grew up in a family of sports enthusiasts, particularly Saint Louis baseball fans; his namesake was his Uncle Derrill, named after a St. Louis Browns baseball player. Derrill was a loyal fan of the Mizzou Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, and the 49ers. He enjoyed traveling to Formula One races with his buddies over the years.
Derrill is survived by his wife, Cheryl Langer (née Mothersead), with whom he shared 32 years of marriage filled with faith, adventure, and treasured memories. He leaves behind his beloved sisters in law and brothers in law, along with nieces, nephews, and their families, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
As a loyal friend, Derrill maintained several life-long friendships; namely, Dick, Eugene, and Margie, who were like family to him.
A significant person in Derrill’s life was Pastor Vernon Armitage who shepherded the beginning of his faith journey.
Immediate family who has preceded and followed recently include his parents and stepparents, brother, David Langer and half-brother, Kenneth Langer, Jr.
Derrill will be remembered for his curious mind, adventurous spirit, and kind heart. His life will be cherished and celebrated by loved ones.
