Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Wayne proudly served in the United States Army before beginning a long and distinguished career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, where he attained the rank of Sergeant. He took tremendous pride in his many years of service, which included serving during the Watts riots of 1965. His career in law enforcement remained one of his proudest accomplishments throughout his life.
Wayne was known for his quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, and ability to make people laugh with his perfectly timed remarks. He enjoyed camping, kayaking, music, and movies, and loved sharing stories and laughter with those around him.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Hughes, and his eldest daughter, Waylene, who tragically passed away as a young woman. He is survived by his daughters, Pam Cherryholmes and Carol Neil, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wayne also helped raise several stepchildren.
For more than a decade, Wayne lived with Mindy and Kevin Wiegel in their Sun Lakes home, where he became a cherished part of their family. He was warmly embraced by their circle of friends in the Sun Lakes Community.
Special appreciation goes to his devoted caregivers, particularly Doris Vidrine and Tracy Rittenhouse, whose kindness, patience, and compassion enriched his life. Heartfelt thanks also go to Marge Owen, who spent years reading to Wayne and offering her friendship and companionship. Sincere gratitude is also extended to the Phoenix VA Home Based Primary Care Team for their dedicated care and support.
Wayne will be remembered for his humor, his unforgettable personality, and the special place he held in the hearts of those who loved him.
Services will be announced at a later date.
