Frederick “Fred” Joseph Westenberger, 88, of Maricopa, Arizona, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026. Born on September 2, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, Fred was the cherished son of Frederick and Theresa (Fullhardt) Westenberger and grew up in Hicksville, New York as one of four siblings.
Fred’s life was defined by unwavering dedication, generosity, and a quiet strength that touched everyone he met. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army for three years, Fred built a long and respected career in the grocery industry on Long Island, where he was known for his steady work ethic, integrity, and genuine care for colleagues and customers alike. In the late 1990s, Fred retired and, together with his beloved wife Barbara, began a new chapter in Arizona.
On September 7, 1968, Fred married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Westphal in Lindenhurst, New York. Their partnership was a testament to devotion and mutual support until Barbara’s passing in 2016.
Fred’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his loving daughters, Lisa (Gerard) Hahn and Diane (Thomas) Anastasio, and his treasured grandsons, Ryan and Dylan Hahn, and Joseph Anastasio. Fred’s legacy lives on in the values he instilled and the memories he created with those he loved most.
A man who found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, Fred enjoyed watching baseball, tinkering in the garage, and tending to his lawn—often accompanied by his loyal dog and a cold beer. He was always active, always present, and always ready with a quiet joke or a helping hand.
Above all, Fred will be remembered for his selflessness, kindness, and the steadfast love he showed his family and friends. His generous spirit and gentle humor leave a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with gratitude and affection.
A Celebration of Life for Fred will be held at a later date on Long Island, New York.
