Herman Hilary Guenther came into this world on June 19th 1935 in the little town of Bancroft Nebraska. On November 8th 2019, in Chandler Arizona, Herm left this world to join Patricia Guenther, his beloved wife of 60 yrs, and walk hand in hand in Heaven.
Herman was a fighter who overcame the greatest odds. He was a spirited young man who was an incredible athlete. When he contracted polio as a teenager, he was told he would never walk again. In fact, he was not expected to live a full, normal life, much less become an old man. But, become an old man he did. Herman Guenther became a man who lived life to the fullest and surrounded himself with a family who adored him. He not only survived polio but went on the marry the love of his life, raise four beautiful children, Robert John, Michael, Amy, and Catherine, and become a supportive grandfather to 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He nurtured a beautiful relationship with his children’s spouses and loved them equally as part of himself.
Herm had a smile that stretched from ear to ear and an eye roll that made it hard to watch and keep a straight face. He refused to see the bad in anyone and was the first person to have something positive to say. He purposed to his Patricia at 12:01am on Friday the 13th, much against her superstitions, just to tempt fate because he knew their love would overcome all odds. Herm was a mischievous soul, who couldn’t decorate an Easter egg without writing curse words in chalk on them before hiding the lovely message in pastel hues. He could recite every street name and house number he’d ever lived on from memory but couldn’t remember the password to unlock his computer. He was a role model to his family and showed his grandchildren what it meant to be resilient and courageous.
In January of 2019, Herman held his wife’s hand for the last time and kissed her goodbye for now. Nine months later, he got to hold her hand once again. On the day Herman Guenther departed this world, he began his eternal life with our Father, his beautiful wife, and their child he had not met yet. He awaits the rest of his family, with a smile on his face and where his cane once stood, a beautiful set of wings has taken its place.
