

Irene Arpa (Wiens) Olson of Sun Lakes, Arizona lived a remarkable 86 years and passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026. Irene was born on November 5, 1939, to Henry and Elizabeth (Tieszen) Wiens on a farm in an agricultural community in Marion, South Dakota.
Raised on the family farm with her sisters Gladys and Orpha, Irene attended a one-room elementary country school and graduated from Marion High School, Class of 1957. She attended Southern State College and began her career in finance and credit management in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
On May 5, 1962, Irene married Paul Olson. On May 6, 1962, they packed up their 1957 Chevy headed west to Scottsdale, Arizona. In 1965, they welcomed their son Patrick (Pat) and in 1967, they welcomed their son Timothy (Tim). Family vacations were spent exploring the beauty of northern Arizona. Camping trips were the highlight of the summer.
Irene spent over 30 years in the Arizona construction industry as a credit manager. She rose through the ranks and held leadership positions at Nelson-Holland, Inc., Arizona Sash & Door and J.R. McDade Company. She also held many leadership roles in the National Association of Credit Managers (NACM), including President, Director, Treasurer and Counselor.
In 2003, Irene retired to Sun Lakes, Arizona. When she wasn’t busy playing tennis or golf, volunteering at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, or playing bunko or cards with her friends, she was traveling the world. Her adventures took her all through Europe, China, Australia, Canada, Mexico and to nearly all 50 states. Many of these adventures were shared with Orpha, including their annual trip to Pasadena, CA with the Pedal Pushers to decorate the Rose Bowl Parade floats.
Irene is survived by her sons Pat (Theresa) and Tim and her special friend Gary McFarlane.
Irene will be remembered for her strong faith, love of family and the willingness to help friends and neighbors whenever needed. Her warmth, kindness, humor and generous spirit touched many. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Risen Savior Lutheran Church, Chandler, Arizona. Arrangements by Valley of the Sun Mortuary & Cemetery.
