Jack Berwyn Slocum

Jack Berwyn Slocum passed away peacefully on July 07, 2026, in Chandler, Arizona. Jack was born on August 15, 1932, in Brimfield, Illinois, the son of Bert and Gladys (LaFollette) Slocum. Jack graduated from Brimfield High School in 1950 where he was actively engaged in many school activities and sports. Living in a very rural farming community, Jack worked in many roles in his youth including farming and paper route deliveries.

Jack joined the Air Force during the Korean War in 1952 primarily serving in the Philippine Islands within the intelligence communities. Jack was honorably discharged in 1956 and achieved the rank of Airman First Class.

Upon his return from military service, Jack returned to Illinois and was introduced to Sharon Lee Stables by Jack’s sister Beverly. Their connection was unmistakable and Jack and Sharon were married in July 1957. They were happily married for 62 years prior to Sharon’s passing in 2020. They had two children, Jeffery and Burt. Jack was regularly active in their lives, including his role in the Boys Scouts as the Assistance Scout Master for Troop 11 in Aurora, Illinois. Jack received The Order of the Arrow during his tenure. Jack had a passion for cars and there was a new car in the driveway every three years! He was particularly excited about his 1971 Buick Riviera GS and his STS Cadillacs.

Soon after his graduation from high school, Jack joined Caterpillar Tractor Company (CAT) in 1950 in Peoria, Illinois. Jack was only seventeen and had to gain approval from both of his parents. Jack enjoyed a long and successful 42-year career at CAT. Jack was a true “boot-strapper” held many distinct roles. He started his career in manufacturing in entry-level roles and was selected to participate in CAT’s apprenticeship program. In 1958, Jack and his close friends were selected to participate in the start-up of the new CAT facility in Aurora, Illinois. They called themselves The CAT RAT pack. Jack rose through multiple management ranks at Aurora which included his last assignment as Planning Manager and the completion of the executive certification program at Aurora College. In late 1978, Jack accepted a promotion to be the Factory Manufacturing Manager in Dallas, Oregon. In late 1979, Jack was promoted to Manufacturing Director at the Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi Plant in Sagami, Japan. Jack held several key roles during his time in Japan and retired from CAT in 1992.

Jack and Sharon lived a vibrant life and travelled the world together. When Jack retired in 1992, they relocated to Sun Lakes, AZ and enjoyed many activities including golf, tennis, and other social activities. They were both involved in their beloved church Sun Lakes United Methodist Church and were instrumental in the growth and expansion of the church. Jack was a veracious reader and could solve any crossword in less than an hour. Jack also loved playing poker with his Sun Lakes friends. Jack was the consummate storyteller and usually provided a valuable life lesson in his tales.

Jack is survived by his children Jeffery (Karen) Slocum of Bandera, TX and Burt Slocum, grandson Tlyer (Rebekka) Slocum, great-grandson Sawyer Slocum, step-granddaughter Carly Cherise Simons, step-great grandson Sylus Slocum all residing in Salem, Oregon. Jack leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his mother and father, his beloved wife Sharon, his sisters Berta (George) Farmer and Beverly (Howard) Smith.

A special recognition and gratitude for the many extraordinary friends, the hospice team and care givers who supported Jack during his final journey. We were truly blessed.

A Celebration of Life has been scheduled for August 15, 2026, 10:00 am, at the Sun Lakes United Methodist Church where he was a member for 34 years. The celebration will be officiated by Pastor Jennifer Lambert. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
