

James W Bell, 86, a resident of Ahwatukee since 1983, passed away on July 22, 2015 surrounded by his family. His memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, Aug 7, 2015, at Mountain View Lutheran Church, 11002 S. 48th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85044. A reception will follow at the church.
Jim was born October 25, 1928, to Merle and Harry Bell in Wetmore, KS, where Jim worked the family farm until he moved to Topeka where he earned his undergraduate degree at Washburn University. Following his passion to become a teacher, he attended Kansas University in Lawrence where he received his Masters and his Doctorate in Education.
Jim met and married his college sweetheart, Marian Lee Pollom, on June 4, 1950. He began his teaching career as Principal at Centralia and Burlingame High Schools in Kansas where he also coached baseball, football and basketball.
Jim joined the Air Force during the Korean War and served 4 years in Special Services at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Accepting an offer to teach at Emporia State Teacher’s College, he moved his family that included 4 daughters, back to Kansas. In 1966, he became a Professor in the College of Education at ASU in Tempe where he taught for the next 25 years, retiring in 1990. Jim and Marian were loyal Sun Devil fans and enjoyed attending all ASU sporting events.
Jim was active in giving back to his community being a longtime member of the Ahwatukee Kiwanis Club and a member of the Ahwatukee Board of Management as a community advocate.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marian and four daughters, Peggy Kinner, Becky Field (Stan), Kathy Jerik and Kristy Bell (Brett), 4 grandchildren (Shawn Kinner, Jessica Guenther (Eric), Payton Marovich, Austin Jerik) and 3 great grandchildren (Kayden, Emily and Taylor Guenther). Jim was preceded in death by his sister Helen Maxine Ditzler of Topeka, KS.
