

James Walter Smykowski, 78, died July 4, 2026. Born October 17, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, he graduated high school and carried forward a steady devotion to the people and places that mattered most to him. A beloved and cherished presence in the lives of many, James will be remembered with deep respect and enduring affection.
James served in the United States Army, fighting in Vietnam from April 1967 to May 1968. After his military service, he worked within the General Motors industry as a Parts Handler, holding various roles over the years. His commitment to honest work and daily responsibility was evident throughout a 30-year career, after which he retired.
James was married to Patricia J. Smykowski for 37 wonderful years. He is survived by his wife, Patricia J. Smykowski, and many cousins in Belleville, Michigan and in Lawndale, CA. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Elizabeth Smykowski, and his sister, Janet Janicki.
In his personal life, James found joy in racquetball, softball, bowling, and golf. He also loved going to the VFW post in Chandler, where he valued the camaraderie of fellow veterans and the familiar comfort of shared stories. Known as a sociable man who could truly get along with anyone, he had a way of making conversation easy and company welcome—qualities that made him deeply cherished by friends and family alike.
James was a member of UAW-AFL-C10 and a parishioner of St. Stevens. He lived in Chandler, Arizona, where he continued to be part of the community and the circles that brought him purpose and connection.
Visitation will be held at Valley of the Sun Mortuary, 10940 East Chandler Heights Rd, Chandler, AZ 85248, US, on July 14, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. The Committal will follow at Valley of the Sun Mortuary on July 14, 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:30 am.
