"Well done, good and faithful servant." -Matthew 25:23
Jerry Wayne Apperton passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, at the age of 66 in Maricopa, Arizona. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, Mattie Apperton, and his loving family. Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that he is now resting at home with the Lord.
Jerry was born on June 11, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, to Willie and Sue Apperton. As the oldest of the children, he naturally embraced a leadership role. From an early age, he displayed strength, determination, and a caring nature that would come to define the man he became.
After graduating from Morgan Park High School, Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis (“Always Faithful”), was reflected in the way he lived his life—with unwavering loyalty to his beloved wife, Mattie, devotion to his family, dedication to his work, and a steadfast commitment to helping others. He was deeply respected for his strong work ethic, willingness to lend a helping hand, and the quiet strength and grace with which he faced life’s challenges. His integrity, character, and dedication left a lasting impression on all who knew and loved him.
One of the most meaningful chapters of Jerry’s life began at the Calumet City Post Office, where he met the love of his life, Mattie. What began as a chance encounter blossomed into a lifelong partnership built on love, friendship, faith, and mutual respect. Jerry and Mattie were united in marriage on July 20, 2017, beginning a beautiful journey that would span many years. Together, they shared countless memories and built a life centered on love, family, and devotion. After retirement, they made their home in Maricopa, Arizona, where they enjoyed spending their days side by side, cherishing the life they built together.
Through his marriage to Mattie, Jerry became a loving and steady presence in the lives of her children. He was a devoted stepfather and grandfather who offered love, guidance, support, and encouragement through the years. He embraced his role with an open heart, and the grandchildren affectionately knew him as “Granddaddy Jerry,” a name he cherished and carried with pride.
Jerry enjoyed fishing, playing cards, cooking delicious meals, and spending quiet time outdoors. He was especially known for his barbecue, which family and friends always looked forward to enjoying. Jerry also shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Cisco. In a charming family tradition that reflected their unique relationship, his wife, Mattie, affectionately called him “Jerry,” while many of his siblings and lifelong friends knew him as “Wayne.” This playful distinction became a cherished part of his life and brought smiles to those who knew him best.
Whether he was spending quality time with family and friends, sharing stories, offering wise advice, or extending a helping hand to someone in need, Jerry had an extraordinary ability to make those around him feel deeply loved, valued, and cared for. His kindness, generosity, and warm spirit left a lasting impact on the hearts of all who crossed his path.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Sue Apperton, and his brother, David W. Apperton.
Jerry leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Mattie Apperton; his daughter, Alicia Morgan-Apperton; and his stepchildren, John Ray, Alina Ray (Garrick) Jones, Yolanda Kamara Ray, Dihichi (Carthesia) Ray, and Shanea Ray.
He is also survived by his siblings, Vickie Apperton, Michael Apperton, Edward (Gwendolyn) Apperton, Daryl (Khalil) Apperton, Linda Apperton, and Steven Apperton, widower of the late Maryann Apperton.
He also leaves behind a host of beloved grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in the many memories we shared and in the lasting impact Jerry had on all who knew and loved him. His life was a testament to faith, perseverance, service, and love.
Jerry is no longer with us in body, but his spirit lives on through the countless memories he created and the many lives he touched. As the saying goes, “When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.”
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." -Psalm 23:6
