John Joseph Ligas Jr.

June 5, 1937April 10, 2019

John Ligas, 81, of Chandler AZ, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of April 10, 2019 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. John was surrounded by his loving family and supported by the excellent Banner Gateway Medical Oncology staff in his final hours.

John is survived by his wife and lifelong sweetheart Judy which he met 63 years ago. John and Judy had 4 children; John (Michele), Terry (Karen), Connie and Rick (Thuan). John and Judy would also adore 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his brother, Robert Ligas and Aunt Rosalie Ligas. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Ann (Blahut) Ligas and brother Tom Ligas.

John was born in Cresson, PA on June 5, 1937. His love for golf began at the age of 12 when he began caddying at the local golf course. As a teenager would spend his summers working in Chicago, IL. His family would eventually move to Chicago, right next door to his future wife Judy. Their relationship began over a ride in a 1955 two tone Buick which unbelievably had white floor mats. Anyone who knows John would not doubt the white floor mats.

John spent his career working for the Chicago and Northwestern railroad. He was an excellent problem solver and was dispatched to various cities around the Midwest during his career. He completed his career with his retirement as an Assistant Division Manager Suburban Division in Chicago at the young age of 53.

John and Judy remained in Chicago for a few years after his retirement to care for his parents. After their passing, they moved to Phoenix and settled in the Chandler area where they built their dream retirement home on the first hole of Ironwood golf course.

John enjoyed golfing, walking and spending time taking an active interest in his grandchildren’s activities.

John was deeply loved and admired and will be missed by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for this summer.
