Kenneth Arden Johnson, born May 4, 1934, in Tingley, Iowa, passed away on June 19, 2025, at the age of 91. Ken is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ellen Johnson. He was the proud father of two children: Kimberly Lynn Ball (Mike Ball) of Fresno, California, and Joel Johnson of Chandler, Arizona. Kimberly and Mike have three children—Nick, Caroline, and Michael. Joel and his wife Heidi have two sons—Ben and Nate. Ken was an avid sports fan and a great athlete in his day. He played basketball and baseball at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, and together with his son Joel who also played basketball and baseball at Simpson College, they became the first father and son duo elected to the Simpson College Athletic Hall of Fame.
After college, Ken dedicated 34 years to the Interstate 35 School District in Iowa, where he served as a teacher, coach, principal, and athletic director, shaping countless young lives. In addition to his career in education, Ken officiated high school boys' baseball and girls' softball games and also refereed high school and college basketball games. Remarkably, he retired after umpiring baseball and softball for over 50 years, at the age of 81. His legacy of passion for sports, education, and family will be remembered by all who knew him.
