Marie H. Zarnick was born on May 16th, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois to Earl and Bernice Hall. She grew up on the North Side with her younger sister, Kathy. She was always family orientated from the beginning to end of her life.
Marie was 16 when she met the love of her life, Greg, at DePaul University. They married on January 3rd, 1969. Shortly after their wedding, Greg was drafted; Marie was involved in a car accident that left in a coma for nearly 6 weeks. She miraculously recovered and set to work starting her family. She was blessed with two wonderful sons, Jim and Ken. It was in Hanover Park, IL, where Marie spent many years raising her family, reading romance novels, knitting and enjoying Diet Cokes. Marie was active in her Catholic faith, always having a home parish across their moves. She and Greg taught CCD for many years. They traveled extensively during their marriage - Japan, Ireland, Europe, and Hawaii, as well as many RV trips around the US. Greg adored his bride and loved her well all the days of her life.
Marie and Greg moved to Orange, California in 1994, as Greg was promoted. As empty-nesters, she found work at the Diocese of Orange. Marie spent her weekends shopping, going to dinners and movies with friends, and made countless visits to Disneyland, a place that brought her much joy. They ended up retiring in Arizona in 2004 to be close to family. Nana (to the Illinois grandchildren) and Grandma (to the Arizona grandchildren) was so intentional to shower her grandkids with cards for every holiday and Advent Calendars too, they were treats they all enjoyed over the years. She always made her grandchildren feel special on their birthdays and all will miss the singing phone calls.
She is survived by her husband, Greg, her eldest son, Jim, daughter-in-law Sheri and their three children: Ellery, Noah, and Ian as well as her younger son, Ken, daughter-in-law Kimberly and their three children: Caleb, Ethan and Alorah. Also surviving are her sister, Kathy Tebo, as well as many brothers-in-laws, sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Marie’s parents preceded her in death, as well as her sister, Dorothy Jean.
Though we grieve her loss, we also celebrate the beautiful life she lived and her unshakable faith that guided her every step. May her legacy of faith and kindness live on in all of us.
