Mona Rae Markie

Mona Rae Markie, 78 of Chandler, AZ passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011 in Chandler, AZ with her family at her side. Mona was born August 14, 1932 in Caribou, ME and spent most of her years in East Millinocket, ME with her husband Arthur (deceased) and three boys, Gary, Tracy and Craig. She is also survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and an extended family and group of friends from Maine to California.

Mona graduated from the University of Maine with a Masters degree in Education. Working as a school teacher for 35 years, she inspired thousands of students first as a primary school teacher and later as a talented art teacher. Mona enjoyed doing arts and crafts as a hobby and took great pleasure in sharing her work as gifts. After retiring, Mona moved to Arizona near family and continued her craftwork. She loved animals and especially loved her two cats.

Travel and looking at scenery were among Mona’s favorite things to do. She took trips up and down the west coast and even cruises to Canada and the Caribbean. Mona also became a dedicated Phoenix Suns fan, never missing an opportunity to watch them play. She enjoyed providing commentary and even yelled at the players on TV to cheer them on.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at Valley of the Sun Mortuary in Chandler, AZ on Friday, May 20th at 3 PM. Her family will bring her ashes to lay her to rest with her husband in East Millinocket at a later date TBD. In lieu of flowers, family asks donations be made to your favorite arts program or animal care charity. Educator, artist, Mom; Mona Markie touched many lives and was loved by all her knew her.
