Richard “Rick” Carter, 53, of Ahwatukee, Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on May 31, 2025. Born in San Gabriel, California, on February 4, 1972, Rick lived a life full of love, laughter, purpose, and unwavering school pride.
Rick graduated from Walnut High School, where he began a lifelong connection to his alma mater. He went on to earn his Master’s degree in Education from Arizona State University, a school he remained fiercely loyal to throughout his life. Whether it was game day or just a random Tuesday, his Sun Devil pride always shined.
On May 28, 2014, Rick married the love of his life, Jamiee Carter, in Fullerton, California. Together, they built a beautiful life in Phoenix. Rick was an incredibly proud stepdad-turned-dad to Hannah, a role he embraced fully and with deep devotion.
For 27 years, Rick dedicated his career to Mountain Pointe High School, working in the science department. He loved his job, his students, and especially his colleagues — many of whom became some of his closest friends. Known affectionately on campus as “Coach Carter,” Rick coached girls varsity tennis for 24 seasons, leaving a lasting impact on countless students and athletes.
Music was Rick’s heartbeat. He attended thousands of concerts over the years and was always the first to suggest a show, a song, or a good story tied to a band. He also loved college football Saturdays, never missed an ASU game, was a happy hour regular, and had a soft spot for every dog he ever met.
Rick is survived by his loving wife, Jamiee Carter (43), his daughter, Hannah Carter (20), his mother, Alice Carter, his in-laws Bruce and Debbie Benson, and his sister-in-law, Jennifer San Nicolas and nephew Soarin San Nicolas. He was preceded in death by his father, Rick Carter, and his brother, Tom Carter.
A celebration of Rick’s life will be held on Sunday, June 22, at The Showroom at the Yard in Tempe, with an open house from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Rick has asked that you wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt and be prepared to party to all of the greatest hits from the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Friends, family, students and colleagues are invited to come share memories, music and laughter in honor of a truly unforgettable man!
