Schuyler was born in Eugene, Oregon on April 7, 1993. He died unexpectedly at home in Chandler, Arizona, on May 9th, 2024. He had been living with epilepsy for 24 years and died from a seizer. Schuyler lived with his mother, Susan (Suzanne Randle) Darby, his stepfather, Peter Darby and his two stepbrothers, Leander and Ariston Darby.
Schuyler was a 6th generation Oregonian, though he grew up both in Oregon and in Tennessee. He loved faith, family, football, fellowship and music. As the firstborn grandchild, he was loved dearly and spoiled by grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
From an early age he loved language, picking out interesting words he heard and using them in sentences far beyond his years. One of his first words was music (myoos-kit) and his first favorite song was Small Town Saturday Night by Hal Ketchum. Around age 2 he said, “Excuse me Mommy, would you please read me a sustaining book?” which was later discovered to be from a Winnie the Pooh story. Like a little professor, he was always very formal in his language. There were years around age 8-9 where he became obsessed with the soles of shoes and would ask complete strangers “show me your sole”. Yes, he was diagnosed with Autism.
When Schuyler was in 6th grade, he discovered football and played for the Franklin, TN Cowboys. This love only grew, and he could see no future that didn’t involve football. He played defensive lineman for Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, Oregon and at Corvallis High School in Corvallis, Oregon. Schuyler went on to play College of the Siskiyous in Weed, CA and Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. He had one speed when it came to football: all-in. His dream was to design gyms and he never gave up on the idea of finishing his degree.
Schuyler’s greatest gift of all was faith. As a child his prayers were thoughtful, soulful, beautiful, sincere and humble in a manner far beyond his years. As his mental health declined through medication changes, he clung to the phrase “Jesus Christ is the Son of God” and would repeat it to himself multiple times throughout the day. He prayed before ANYTHING crossed his lips and read scripture daily. He was grateful for everything and did not bemoan his situation in life. He was happiest when serving, giving or doing for others. Schuyler found his church home at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Glendale, Arizona. By the Grace of God, he found fellowship in the Celebrate Recovery group at the Grove Church in Chandler, Arizona.
Schuyler was a Courtesy Clerk at Fry’s on Chandler Heights and Gilbert Rd. They were kind in working with him through various challenges and he enjoyed being there. He enjoyed it so much that he would often be found hanging out and watching tv in the break room before or after work.
Family meant everything to Schuyler, especially his mother. He trusted her implicitly in all things and was effusive in his praise and love for her. He was happy to be included in anything that was happening, which included sitting through countless gigs that were likely not very exciting. When his mother started dating her husband Pete, he immediately took to his bonus brothers Lee and Ariston. He loved being around his cousins, aunts, uncles, grands. He was loved deeply by many and will be missed forever.
Schuyler was preceded in death by his grandmother, Kay Mills. He is survived by his mother, Suzanne Darby, his stepfather Peter Darby, his brother Chance Randle (Megan; Emery, Everly, and Henry), his stepbrothers Leander and Ariston Darby, grandfather Dan Randle (Franchelle), Uncles Sean (Jessica, Dannett: Kaitlin, Jacob, Charlee, SJ; Miles) and Scott (Shannon: Dominique (Logan: Charles, Jonah) Greenwell, Alexandria, and Zachary (Oliver))
