He married Beth Mauldin in September 1942 shortly after joining the US Army Air Corps, from which he was honorably discharged in December 1945. Sy valued his military experience and considered it one of the highlights of his life. After leaving the military, Sy joined the Flying Tiger Line, where he remained employed for his entire professional career, first as a mechanic and later as an airplane maintenance supervisor. He found meaning and camaraderie working with “the Tigers” and often shared stories from that time period, always with a smile on his face.
Sy and Beth moved to Smithtown NY, where they lived for many years. Sy retired from Flying Tigers just before the merger of Flying Tigers and Federal Express in August 1989. Sy and Beth moved to Sun Lakes AZ shortly after his retirement date.
Sy became a widower in August 1996. He met Maxine Ralston in 1998; they fell in love and married in 2001. They thoroughly enjoyed their sunset years together until Maxine passed away in June 2017.
Sy is survived by his son Jack, granddaughters Sherry Boylan Hackney (and her husband Gene) and Ginger Keeler (and her husband Bill), and great-granddaughter Brianna Lynn Boylan, nieces Irene Roseman, Sharon Woodward and Lori Hearn. He loved his family and his extended family including his “almost-daughter” Audree Kropen and his beloved dog, Monte.
Sy Goro was a unique and special man. He will be sorely missed.
Funeral services will be held on November 15 at Valley of the Sun Mortuary & Cemetery (10940 E. Chandler Heights Rd, Chandler AZ 85248) beginning at 11 AM. Following the service, a post-funeral reception will be held at his home in Sun Lakes.
