Shirley's life was one of service and hard work from assembling airplane engines in WWII to working as a social worker for the City of Kenosha. She was an active member of 4 Square Church where she met and married her loving husband, then continued God's work and raised their family at the Lakeshore Tabernacle. In 1977 they moved to Mesa, Arizona to assist with the growing needs of the faith based non-profit, Indian Trails. Her lifelong support of Jerry and Betty McSorley and the Outreach Services in Zapata, Texas never waivered.
