Harry Joseph Schafer

Harry Joseph Schafer, 89, died September 12, 2026 at home surrounded by his family. Born October 31, 1936, in New Kensington, PA, he was the son of Josephine E. Paustenbach and Harry William Schafer. He was a resident of Chapin, South Carolina for 25 years, but a Pittsburgh Steelers fan for life. To those who knew him best, he was affectionately known as "Porky", "Hairball", and "Smurf"; names that became a cherished part of the memories his friend & family share.

Harry retired from Oberg Industries after 35 years of service where he was an Inventory Control Clerk. Throughout his life, he found steady enjoyment in the outdoors and in time well spent with others. An avid hunter and fisherman, he took great pleasure in golf—both on the course and through his work in the Timberlake Golf Course Pro Shop after retirement. He also enjoyed the fellowship of car clubs in Pennsylvania, valuing the camaraderie and shared interests they offered.

Harry’s faith remained an important part of his life. He was a member of Chapin Christian Community Church and Chapin Baptist, where he found community and worship among friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Maita Valjean Connor Schafer; his daughter, Martia V. Schafer (Willie); and his son, Shawn E. Schafer (Ann). He is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Logan Goodlin, Kelsie Schafer, Kylie Schafer, Keaghan Schafer, Mason Frick, Jasmine Frick, Bryson Wages, Kingston Wages, Draco Wages, Adonis Wages, and Gunnar Wages; and his siblings, Mildred Troup, Elizabeth Cowdrey (Robert), Cathleen Kiebler (Don), Catherine Rutter (Gary), and James Schafer (Kathy). He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who will carry his memory with them. He was predeceased by his daughter, Pamela L. Schafer Goodlin; nephew, Lee A. Schafer; and niece, Cynthia N. Rutter Harvey.

Harry will be remembered with respect and gratitude by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at Chapin Baptist Church, 950 Old Lexington Hwy, Chapin, SC 29036.
