

CHAPIN, SC – A memorial service for Herbert Lawrence Smith, 86, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Rosary beginning at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Mr. Smith was born June 3, 1925 in Rutherford, NJ and died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, October 10, 2011 at the Heritage at Lowman. He was a son of the late Herbert L. Smith and Emilie Jacobson Martinson. He served his country in the United States Navy as an x-ray technician and subsequently graduated from Jamestown Community College in Western New York. He was an Industrial Engineer who worked in many capacities as a manager and teacher. He also served his community as a leader in many civic organizations to include the Cancer Crusade, Community Chest, Catholic Men’s Club, AARP, and many more. Herbert Smith was an avid golfer and member of the Dusty Hills Country Club. He also loved music and played in the Salvation Army Band as a youth and in more recent years sang with the Swamp Fox Follies in Marion. Herbert and his wife Mary Lou lived for over 40 years in Marion, SC prior to moving to Chapin, SC in 2005. Our dad was a devoted husband and father and delighted in the joy of his eight grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Schrantz Smith of Chapin; son, David L. Smith (Barbara) of Wayne, NY; daughter, Linda L. Smith (Kim) of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Laurie Smith Fraser of Chapin; sister, Bertha Sandstrom of Jamestown, NY; brother, Rev. Arthur Smith of Darlington; brother, Walter “Buster” Martinson of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Michael D. Smith, Chad J. Smith, Matthew K. Smith, Brandon D. Smith, Leanne M. Smith, Kayce M. Fraser (fiance’ William Jarman), Taylor C. Fraser, father Lawrence Fraser, Hannah L. Closuit and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by stepfather, Walter Martinson and sister, Emily Hall.
The family is very grateful to all the staff from The Heritage at Lowman Rehabilitation Center and Lutheran Hospice of SC for all the loving and supportive care provided to Herb and his wife Mary Lou.
