CHAPIN – Sherrill Painter, 68, beloved wife and mother, passed away in her sleep on September 16, 2019. She was born in Columbia, SC to John O. Nates and Jane B. Nates on July 6, 1951. She was married to Thomas M. Painter on January 6, 1973 and was blessed with two beautiful children, Michael Paul, born August 21, 1975 and Elizabeth Jane on June 10, 1979. They were two of the main joys in her life.
Sherrill was blessed to be involved with her church life both at Union UMC in Irmo as a part of their kindergarten program, starting and teaching the 2 ½ year old class, and at Chapin UMC as the kindergarten – 1st grade Sunday School teacher. She also served as a facilitator of numerous Bible studies at the church. She had a true passion for the ladies’ ministry and touched many lives through her Mary Kay business. She found that it was more about her passion for touching lives and lifting people up that made her life so fulfilling.
Sherrill was truly blessed with two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Bryson of West Palm Beach, FL. They were the lights of her life as were the many nieces and nephews that were constantly being added to her family. She was so blessed by her sisters, Becky Payne (Kim), Jennie Martin (Ed), and Karen Cooper (John); brother, John Nates (Becky); and brother-in-law, Jim Painter (Alice). She had many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces, all of whom she loved very much. She cared for everyone she came into contact with through her true gift of compassion and nurturing. Many have spoken of the profound impact she had on their lives. She will be missed by so many and has left a true legacy through her love of our Lord.
She was predeceased by her dad, John Nates; uncle, Claude C. Beckham; maternal grandparents, Claude S. Beckham and Margaret Beckham; paternal grandparents, John W. Nates and Ruth Nates; step-father, Julian Marchant; sister, Jennie Martin; and her in-laws, Kent and Anne Painter. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Thomas M. Painter; children, Michael (Lauren) and Elizabeth; mother, Jane Nates Marchant; sister, Becky Payne (Kim); step-sister, Karen Cooper (John); brother, John Nates (Becky); brother-in-law, Ed Martin, her grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews.
Her service will be held at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at Chapin United Methodist Church, 415 Lexington Avenue, Chapin, SC 29036 to celebrate her amazing life. The visitation will follow the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.
