He was the beloved husband of Judith Wessinger Swygert for 68 years. Together, they built a loving family that includes their children: Donna Briquet (Jean-Michel), Kenneth Swygert, Joann White (Jim), and Richard Swygert (Wendy). John was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Counts (Bobby), his brother, The Rev. David Swygert (Marilyn), and many cherished nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Carroll Verner Swygert and Roslyne Bouknight Swygert, and nephew, Kevin Timothy Counts.
John was a graduate of Chapin High School, 1954. Previously he was employed by the RL Bryan Company, Holmes Furniture Company, and Edisto Dairies. He retired from Nabisco after more than 35 years of dedicated service. A man of deep faith, John was an active member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church, where he served as Sunday School treasurer, on the church council, and a youth group advisor. He also proudly served his country in the South Carolina Air National Guard for six years. John had served as a past president of The Woodmen of the World, local chapter, and remained an active member until his death. John was looking forward to making it to his 90th birthday and his family is grateful to God for allowing that to happen.
John will be remembered for his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, his warm and friendly smile, and his unwavering dedication to hard work. There was always time for a favorite story or one of his favorite jokes. His favorite pastimes were fishing and camping in the RV. He and Judy were past IPTAY members. He was a lifelong devoted fan of the Clemson Tigers and attended many football and baseball games over the years.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers of Amedisys Hospice for their kindness and support during John’s final days.
