He graduated from Metropolis Illinois High School and joined the military the same year, 1953. When he left the regular Army, he joined the Army Reserves at Fort Jackson for over 27 years and then the South Carolina Air National Guard at McEntire Air Force Base for 14 years. Lawrence retired after 33 years with the Columbia Fire Department as Battalion Chief.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Catherine Derrick Nelson; son, Larry Nelson (Angie); stepson, Tommy Jackson (Michelle); stepdaughter, Jackie Banton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Judy Nelson; and sister, Penny McMinn.
He was predeceased by his son, Mike Nelson and brother, David Nelson.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, 101 E Boundary St, Chapin, SC 29036, with a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
