
Mattie Lindler, 87, passed away on June 27, 2026. Born in Irmo, SC on March 12, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Walter L. Bouknight and Julia Ballentine Bouknight. She was a graduate of Columbia College.
A devoted and hard-working educator, Mattie was a retired schoolteacher who spent most of her career teaching third grade at Chapin Elementary. With steady patience, honest care, and a gentle way of guiding others, she helped shape young lives through daily lessons and quiet encouragement. Her faithful spirit and compassionate presence were a comfort to many, and her wisdom—often delivered with a touch of humor—left an enduring impression.
Mattie’s generous heart was evident not only in what she gave, but in how thoughtfully she gave it. She was cherished and beloved by those who knew her, admired for her resilience and bravery through life’s seasons, and remembered for a
selfless loyalty that never sought attention. In the simple joys of reading, quilting, and growing flowers, her kind-hearted nature and calm steadiness shone through, reflecting a life lived with care and purpose.
Mattie is survived by her husband of 59 1/2 years, Carroll Bryan Lindler; sons Heyward (Debra) Lindler and Walter Lindler; grandchildren, Whitney King and Jessie Lindler; and great grandchildren, Elijah and Lila King. She is also survived by sisters, Judy McHugh and June Estes; brothers, Howard Bouknight and Thomas Bouknight; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Summers.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter Lloyd Bouknight; her sister, Edith Bouknight; and brothers-in-law, Edward Lindler and J.L. Lindler.
Mattie will be remembered with deep gratitude and lasting affection—as an inspirational presence, a thoughtful friend, and a steadfast member of her family and community. Her legacy of love, faithfulness, and quiet strength will continue in all who were blessed to share in her life.
A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home- Chapin Chapel, 123 Columbia Ave., Chapin, SC 29036. A graveside service will be Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church, 844 Columbia Avenue, Chapin, SC 29036.
