

Shirley Skipper Carter Morris, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Chapin on January 31,2025. Born on October 1, 1934, in Cartersville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Polly Lyles Skipper and Wardie Maynard Skipper. She attended Dreher High School and then graduated from Mullins High School. She was a joy to be around and was a happy, sweet lady and smiled until the end.
Shirley was an office manager for Earl Collins Ford in Mullins for many years. After moving to Columbia, she worked for Construction Control Corp. and then retired from Display Data Computer Company as an installation specialist. She had a catering business in Columbia, VIP Catering and enjoyed doing weddings and other parties. Shirley enjoyed sewing since she was in high school and made some of her own clothes including beautiful dresses and drapes for herself and others. She loved making items to sell at the Gingerbread House raising money for Pee Dee Academy where her three children attended. She was always excited to decorate for Halloween and have parties at her home on Lake Murray. She even hosted three weddings in her front yard and really enjoyed entertaining.
Shirley is survived by her three children, John Carter (Nancy) of Charleston, Phoebe Carter of Columbia and Rianne Thomas of Chapin; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Dowell of Lawndale, NC; two grandchildren, Jessica Carter Clendenin (Rob) of Charleston, Weston Thomas (Madison Hallman) of Gilbert; three great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her first husband, John Smith (Smitty) Carter, Jr.; her second husband, Philip Alan Morris; older brother, Joseph Skipper; and a son-in-law, Brian Thomas.
The family will have a private service at Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. They would like to thank MSA Hospice of Newberry for their wonderful support, especially Brandi, and Beverly. Also, thank you to her caregivers Alli, and Dianne for their wonderful care. The combination of your love and care has been instrumental.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to Medical Services of America Hospice Care Charity Foundation, Prisma Children’s Hospital “Camp Kemo” or a charity of one’s choice.
