

Stephen E. Thoma, age 91, of Chapin, SC, passed away on October 10, 2025, with his loving wife of 58 years Sally by his side. He was born on May 14, 1934, to Stephen and Anna Thoma, grew up in Mansfield, Ohio, and was the youngest of 13 children. Steve was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
After high school, Steve served in the United States Marine Corps as a machine gunner and was a proud Korean War Veteran. During his time in the service, he earned several commendations and medals, including one for his participation in a swimming rescue off the shore of Iwo Jima where he entered dangerous waters several times in attempts to save drowning soldiers.
After his time in the military, Steve attended Indiana Tech, where he received degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering. He was offered and accepted a job at Richards-Wilcox in Aurora, IL, where he was a Senior Engineer and Architect on projects throughout the United States. Steve enjoyed many hobbies and was known for his wit and sense of humor.
In 1967, he met and married his beloved wife Sally who survives. He was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Oswego, IL.
In 2022, Steve and Sally moved to Chapin, South Carolina, to be near their daughter and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 12 siblings, including his special brother Jack, who we know he is now reunited with after 71 years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sally, his daughter Amy, and his grandchildren, Allison and Lilianna.
A private graveside service with full military honors will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC.
