CHAPIN – Funeral services for Walter F. Metze, 83, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 19, 2018 at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. Memorials may be made to St. Jacobs Lutheran Church, 844 Columbia Ave., Chapin, SC 29036 or The Boys Farm, PO Box 713, Newberry, SC 29108. Walter passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2018. Born in Columbia, SC on October 4, 1935 to the late Walter F. and Tillie Haltiwanger Metze. He graduated from Irmo High School in 1953, lettering in both football and baseball. Walter served 8 honorable years in the United States Air National Guard. He was a lifelong Lutheran, Charter Member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and member of St. Jacobs. Walter loved traveling in his RV, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Most of all, he was a man of faith and loved spending time with his family. Walter is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Miriam Sandel Metze; daughter, Anita Dye (Steve) of Columbia; son, Deryl Metze (Rhonda) of Chapin; daughter, Ann Corley (Michael) of Chapin; grandchildren, Ashley Ingram (Jonathan), Richard Corley (Lindsay), Joshua Maddox (Dawn), Andrew Metze (Kim), Heather Maddox (Seth), Joshua Metze (Laura), Justin Corley (Austin), Amber Helms (David), and Reagan Mathes; two great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren; brother, Terry Metze, Sr. (Barbara); sister, Loretta Eubanks (Billy); sister in-law, Terrie Metze and special cousin, C. Richard Lindler. Walter was preceded in death by his grandson, Russell Metze and brother, Duane Metze. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Palmetto Health Heart Hospital and Dr. Ben Jones for their heartfelt care.
