Willie ”David“ Ayer passed away at home June 23, 2022, at the age of 79, after a long hard-fought battle with liver disease. His parents were Willie Ruth Ayer and Mary Lucille Creech Ayer. David grew up in Barnwell, SC, and moved to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina.
He had such a fun, outgoing personality with a priceless laugh, which made him the perfect person to work with people in his career. He joined the service staff at National Cash Register in Columbia where he received training to service cash registers statewide and later received training to be a computer service technician, focused primarily on the installation at Myrtle Beach AFB. Later he joined Horseman Doll Manufacturing as a production manager. He then moved on to become a salesman and manager in the Medical Records field. He made many friends as a medical records manager in the NC and SC hospitals who remained dear friends after his retirement.
Some of David’s favorite things to do were to fish and get out on Lake Murray. He also loved to camp with his high school buddies from Barnwell and enjoyed several camping trips a year to the Savannah River. Gardening was always a love of his, even though at the end it was just tomato plants on the deck. He was very active in his church, Lake Murray Presbyterian, and loved going to their Friday Morning Prayer Breakfast.
David is survived by his wife of 38 years, Cheryl, and his children, Troy Ayer (Catherine), Tracey Holmes (Alan), Kim Burgess (Hal), Robbie Burgess (Tia); his grandchildren, David Alan Holmes, Justin Holmes, Zachary Holmes, Matthew Holmes, Grace Holmes, Annabelle Holmes, Emma Holmes, Walker Holmes, Sarah Holmes, Hunter Bailey, Brandon Ayer, Sam Burgess, Austin Burgess, Aubrey Burgess, Aaron Burgess and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Katherine Peterson.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Hank Alford for all his care and special friendship during this trying time.
Funeral services will be on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at 3:00 PM at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church, located at 2721 Dutch Fork Rd., Chapin. The family will receive well-wishers following the service. The family would appreciate if memorials in David’s name were made to Lake Murray Presbyterian Church in lieu of flowers.
