Gene was born in Enoch (Clay County), on May 6, 1929, to Norman and Hettie Loving and was the youngest of 10 children. Gene found his calling in constructing and remodeling homes. He was also a great mechanic and could fix anything. Love in the form of wife, Joyce Newcomer Loving, brought him a large and loving family. They meshed two families into one with children Don Loving (deceased), Rick Newcomer (Kim) of Charleston, Kathy Johnson (Guy) of Clarkston Washington and David Newcomer (Joyce) of Charleston and 17 grand/great grandchildren.
Gene was known for his humor. He loved to make a room laugh with his wit and stories. He enjoyed helping people and would often help family, friends and neighbors with problems and never charge them for his time. He enjoyed going back to Clay county to hunt and taught Rick and David to love the woods. They remember going to "the camp" and deer hunting during the week of Thanksgiving. He loved the outdoors and could name all the trees and their leaves. In later years he loved to watch the birds and animals from his recliner through the picture window in the living room.
Gene was a very private person and didn't like large gatherings. He loved to have family come home and enjoyed watching the children grow up. He would come out to the pool while the grandchildren would swim but they couldn't get him out of his long pants or in the pool. He was never one to say "I love you" but he showed his affection with his actions. He softened up in his later years and was much more huggable. He enjoyed the holidays and always wanted the Christmas Star he built lit on the hill behind the house.
Gene was a Christian and was saved at Cathedral of Prayer Church in Charleston and was a Trustee of (former) Mt Olive Baptist Church on Coopers Creek.
