OBITUARY

Alfred Paul Townsend

October 15, 1926November 7, 2019

Alfred Paul Townsend, 93, loving husband and devoted father, passed away November 7.

Paul was born in Red Springs, NC. He grew up in the Great Depression and deferred his last year of high school to serve the Navy in World War II. Upon return from war, while completing high school, he met the love of his life, Dorothy, to whom he was married for more than 71 years. He worked in a mill to support his disabled father while putting aside money each week to further his education. After several years, Paul and Dorothy moved to Chicago where he studied television broadcasting, which was just emerging. He worked briefly in Florence, SC, and then at WBTV in Charlotte for more than 25 years, where he retired as Chief Engineer. Paul was an avid golfer, who had 11 holes-in-one, all after the age of 60, and who “shot his age” at least 200 times.

Paul is survived by Dorothy, by two daughters, Cathy Butner (David) of Charlotte and Sharon Miggans (Jim) of Dallas, TX, by a son, Ronald (Renee) of Charlotte, by six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The family wishes to express its appreciation to the Atrium Surgical Trauma ICU team, which provided him such compassionate care and enabled him to pass with the grace and dignity that characterized his life.

Paul lived and demonstrated his faith every day. A funeral will be conducted at Durham Memorial Baptist Church, 1601 Toddville Rd, at 3:00 PM, Sunday, November 10, with visitation preceding at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in his honor to Durham Memorial.

I worked in projection when I first worked at WBTV and the engineers were in the same space. Paul was always so kind to me as a lowly projectionist. My condolences to the family.

Uncle Paul was one of the most wonderful, kind, and Godly men I have ever known. We never know how our lives affect others...and I’m sure Uncle Paul never quite believed me when I told him how much he had influenced my life. Growing up without a father was difficult. But Uncle Paul and Aunt Dot visited so often. I always looked forward to their visits. They were so loving and kind to my brother and I. They spent time with us and put “skin” to God’s love and compassion. Aunt Dot even took me to buy my first bra...not that I actually needed one...but at age 14, she wanted me to feel like all the other girls in high school! Uncle Paul taught my bother how to play golf...both of them excelled in that sport. I will always remember and appreciate and cherish the love of Jesus that Uncle Paul exhibited in his life! His life made a huge difference! Can’t wait to see him in heaven ! Aunt Dot, Ron, Cathy, and Sharon...you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I can’t even imagine the hole that will be left in your lives. May God’s comfort fill your hearts in the days to come!

I worked alongside Paul at WBTV for several years before I transferred over to Jefferson Data Services. He was one of my most revered mentors and taught me much about the engineering side of broadcast television. He impressed me with his professional style, limitless technical knowledge and his buttoned-down demeanor.

Paul was the elite professional but was kind and friendly. He never talked down to me and always answered any question I asked him. He loved his job and instilled in me a spirit of loyalty, dedication and the desire to always try to achieve perfection in my job.

I will miss my friend Paul Townsend, but I look forward to meeting him again!

I'm so sorry to hear this news. I had the privilege of working with Paul for many years at WBTV. He was a very talented and professional engineer. The go to person to fix any problem technically.
Your family members are in my thoughts and prayers.
