Alma Hoke Greene

September 4, 1951September 12, 2020

With profound sadness, her family announces the death of Alma Hoke Greene, 69, who died on Saturday, September 12th, 2020 at her home in Boone, North Carolina. Alma died peacefully in the arms of her loving husband, Don.

Alma was born September 4, 1951 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the first of three children born to Orin Vance Hoke, Jr. and Helen Woodside Hoke.

After graduating from Myers Park High School in 1969, Alma attended Birmingham-Southern studying biology and English, and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She transferred to UNC Charlotte to continue her studies. On March 14, 1971, Alma married her best friend and the love of her life, Don Greene. After marriage, Alma began her career working for the City of Charlotte testing water quality.

After many years of helping Don, in the room above their garage with his textile sales representative job, she and Don founded A. Hoke Ltd., in 1989. They started with one location in Charlotte and in 1992, added another showroom in Raleigh. Alma’s passion for the interior design industry, her love of all things beautiful, and her commitment to exceptional customer service, led to creating the premier interior trade showrooms in the Carolinas. In addition, Alma was most proud of her relationships with her employees and customers.

The joy of Alma’s life was her family and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, Nana, and mentor to many. Nothing made Alma happier than to spend time with her family. Weekends with her two grandchildren brought her so much joy. To her friends, Alma was accomplished, smart, generous, and warm. Alma was welcoming to all and made everyone feel as if he or she was a best friend.

Alma loved spending time at her mountain home in Hound Ears where she entertained with gracious, Southern-style. She was a competitive card player, a fabulous cook, a designer of gorgeous flower arrangements, and a willing, but often reluctant golfer. She was an enthusiastic and successful fundraiser for many local charities, especially the Appalachian Regional Healthcare Foundation. She unselfishly gave of her time and talents to Hound Ears Club by serving as a two-term board member.

Alma loved traveling to warm places, especially to Florida and Palm Springs, CA. She enjoyed many trips with her family and friends. For the past ten years, however, Alma’s greatest pleasure was being able to work side by side at A. Hoke Ltd. with her daughter, Elaine.

Alma is survived by her beloved husband of 49 years, Don Allen Greene; adored daughter, Elaine Greene Hougham (Kym); grandchildren, Lilly Katherine Gray and Walker Cooper Gray; and sister, Elaine Hoke Wooley (Steven). She was preceded in death by father, Orin Vance Hoke, Jr.; mother, Helen Woodside Hoke; and brother, Orin Vance Hoke, III.

A small, private family service will be held Thursday, September 17th in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Appalachian Regional Healthcare Foundation. (https://apprhs.org/make-a-one-time-gift/). Appalachian Regional Healthcare Foundation, PO Box 7600, Boone, NC 28607.

Dear Don,
It was many years ago that Morgan and I met you and Alma when we shared a condo in Sandpiper Run. You were both delightful. Over the intervening years I have enjoyed seeing Alma at A Hoke. She was always so friendly and took time to share stories with me. She made owning a huge showroom look effortless! I feel a great loss that is shared by other designers and friends who loved being with Alma.
I am thinking today of you and Elaine and your family. It was special for me to be with all of you on line at the funeral.
My deepest sympathy.

Greetings, Don and Elaine
Seeing Alma's obituary was a great shock and saddened me. I knew Alma years ago, as she served in many of the ASID Symphony Designer Houses.
Alma was always pleasant to work with in the Designer Showroom she owned. Professional service was well provided by the staff.
We had many good times together Don with you and Alma. Many laughs were shared and bonding took place.
Alma surely will be missed, but her light will always shine for all who knew her.
Don and Elaine, you are in my thought and prayers. May you experience Gods love and strength during your time of sorrow.
Much Love,

We are so deeply saddened by your loss and send our heart filled prayers to your entire family. We will always remember Alma as a gentle and kind soul, both personally and professionally. Dennis had the pleasure of working with her at Hound Ears on projects, and we personally sharing time on our many walks up Hickory when we lived in the development. Don, the love, friendship and mutual respect that you and Alma shared was so evident. We send you all of our love and prayers for healing.
Love, Dennis and Cheryl Moretz

Alma was always there for me !
She shared her knowledge with my Interior design students from Cpcc. Year after year Alma would tour the students around the beautiful A HokeLtd. showroom. I could watch the students light up with excitement as Alma would discuss the Real design world. For most students, it was the first outstanding showroom they had ever seen. She opened her doors to so many new designers, shared samples and catalog s and just extended her design library to help my students.
As I later retired from teaching, I once again reached out to Alma. I showed her my art work! She was receptive to placing my art in her showroom . I was so very honored!
Alma, thank you for always being so kind to me and showing the path to so many of my students .
I will see you on the other side!

Amy and I have known Don and Alma only a short time through our affiliation at Hound Ears, but in that time have developed a fondness of two obviously special and gracious people. We had lunch outside two weeks ago at the club and enjoyed hearing of their next chapter in life with new homes in Charlotte and Naples.
We were shocked and deeply saddened along with the rest of the community to hear of Alma’s sudden passing. We know hers was life cut short, but also realize it was a life well lived by a wonderful wife and mother. Our deepest condolences go out to Don and Elaine and the rest of her family. May God grant you peace and comfort you.
