Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, she was the daughter of Fred and Hildegard Sowa. Anita’s lifelong passion for dance began in her youth as she toured throughout the Midwest. At 18, she followed her dreams to New York City, where she earned a coveted place as an iconic Radio City Rockette at Radio City Music Hall (RCMH). As the tallest center position dancer, in the kick line for several years, she commanded the stage with precision, grace, and elegance.
It was at RCMH where Anita met the love of her life, Abraham (Abe) Pokrassa, the Director of Publicity. She eventually traded her tap and toe shoes for a new life with Abe. They continued to dance together through 63 years of marriage. They built a beautiful life in New York City, where Anita balanced her roles as a devoted mother, a domestic engineer, and her work for the New York City public schools.
A longtime member of The Riverside Church and an active community member, Anita also remained a dedicated Board Member of the Rockette Alumnae Association. She lived with sincerity and intention, known for a kind, generous spirit, an infectious laugh, and quick-witted humor. Her beautiful smile served as a light to everyone she met.
Anita loved to travel, enjoyed chocolate-covered cherries, classic movies, tulips, and treasured her collection of unique wooden boxes gifted to her from around the world.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Abe. She is survived by her three children: John (Suze), Anne (Adam), and Elisabeth (Rony); and her four cherished grandsons: Ben, Joe, Jacob, and Alex. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends near and far.
Burial will be on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 10 am at Salisbury National Cemetery, 500 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC.
