Antonio "Tony" Lopez-Ibanez

January 20, 1937February 19, 2021

Charlotte, NC - Antonio Lopez-Ibanez "Tony," beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 19, 2021, at the age of 84.

Tony was born in Havana, Cuba, on January 20, 1937, to Raul and Maria Antonieta Lopez-Ibanez. After he graduated law school, he married Zaydee Baicovitz in 1959. He was forced to leave Cuba due to Fidel Castro’s oppressive political regime. After briefly residing in Tampa, FL, and New York, he and Zaydee settled in Charlotte in 1961. With the help of his father-in-law, Enrique Baicovitz, they started the Charlotte Trimming Co. His dream was to create a business that would enable him to bring his brothers to Charlotte, which within a few years, he was able to fulfill. A tireless born leader, with an amazing work ethic, he, his brothers, Raul and Johnny, and lifetime associate Miguel Salcines, built Charlotte Trimming to become a dynamic company and industry leader in the specialty knit trims market they served for 40 years. His passion was to be on the factory floor, engaging with team members (as he would call them) and motivating them to be the best they could. Often considered a melting pot of cultures, Charlotte Trimming would at one point employ team members from over 20 countries and 5 continents, working in Charlotte.

Tony and his wife, Zaydee, became active members of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in 1965. He and his wife were extremely devoted to the Catholic Church. He would serve on Charlotte Mercy Hospital and Belmont Abbey boards and be active in many other Catholic organizations, including membership in the Knights of Malta and Cursillo movement. He will be remembered as a great husband, father, and a selfless, humble servant of God, with a fierce will to help the underprivileged and needy from all over the world. A true hero to many, his passion and energy will be sorely missed.

Tony also loved classical music and was a board member of the Charlotte Symphony for many years. He was also a dedicated lifetime member of the YMCA who served on numerous committees and is credited as one of the main driving forces in introducing racquetball to the YMCA. It became a ritual to see him, his brothers, and his friends playing racquetball every weekday during lunchtime.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Zaydee; sons Tony Jr. and wife Larissa, Enrique and wife Lina and grandchildren: Michael Anthony, Lindsey Marie, Julianna Andrea, Antonio Konstantinos, and Maria Violeta. He is also survived by many loving family members.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 24, from 10 AM to 11 AM at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church on Providence Road. Mass of Christian Burial will be on the same day at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina ( or to an organization of your choice.

The best memory I'll hold onto was his beautiful smile, it would light up anyone's day. He was a very special Soul, always kind and serving others. I'm forever grateful for the way He embraced our family and the love he had for my mother Judith. What I loved the most about Tio Tony was that he was in love with the gift of life and all that envelope his world. He will be sorely missed.

Zaydee, Tony Jr and Ricky-

I don’t know how to adequately say what a great person Tony was but his kindness to our family and personally to me is tough to describe. I just know that he always treated me with love and kindness and for that I am thankful to have known him and in reality all the Lopez-Ibanez family... Heaven is now filled with a large amount of great Cubans and I’m sure they are all together eating paella and having a wonderful time waiting on all of us ❤️❤️❤️❤️

My love to all of you

We thank you for his lifetime reverence and respect for you, and his commitment and devotion to your Son in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We thank you for his generous spirit and ready willingness to serve others and provide for others in need. We thank you for the 62 years with Zaydee in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and the gift and heritage of children and grandchildren.
