Arlene, 89, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, surrounded by her loving family and the devoted care of hospice.
Born April 14, 1936, in Jamaica, New York, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Purdy Macdonald and Amy Elizabeth Macdonald.
Arlene married the love of her life, Tom Andrews, who lovingly called her “Bear” — a fitting tribute to her nurturing, protective spirit. Known as “everybody’s mom,” Arlene welcomed all with open arms, a warm smile, and legendary home‑cooked meals. Her wooden spoon was equally famous for stirring pots and guiding kids back on track.
She mothered not only her own children but the friends and neighborhood kids as well, even serving as the unofficial ambulance driver for the River Bend football team. During her years in New Bern, she volunteered countless hours at New Bern Hospital, where she was cherished for her compassion, humor, and infectious smile.
Arlene is survived by her children, Ken Andrews (Deegie), Lisa Hood (Greg), and Charles Andrews (Amanda); her five grandchildren — Mitchell Andrews, Emily Padgett (Dale), Harrison Hood (Michelle), Sam Andrews, and Alisa Andrews — and eight great‑grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Andrews; her parents; her sister, Jane Paladino; and her grandson, Matt Andrews.
