Charlotte - Audrey Madans, 89, passed away on April 15, 2021. She was born on December 14, 1931, a daughter of the late Maurice and Clara Rogovin, and beloved wife of her late husband, Jerome Madans, whom she married in 1951 and had passed away in 1994.
Audrey came to Charlotte in 1951, moved to Salisbury in 1971, and back to Charlotte in 1986. In Salisbury, she hosted The Forum, a radio talk show on station WSTP. She always referred to herself as a professional volunteer, serving as President of many organizations in Charlotte and Salisbury, Temple Israel Sisterhood twice in Charlotte, and at Temple Israel in Salisbury.
In addition, she served as President of all of the following at one point: United Arts Council, Rowan County, Salisbury/Rowan Choral Society, Friends of the Rowan County Public Library, Blumenthal Jewish Home for the Aged, Clemmons and Greensboro, Fullwood Station Questers, Matthews, Charlotte Chapter Hadassah, and the North Carolina Association of Jewish Women and Men.
She was Board Member of Temple Israel, Charlotte, Jewish Family Services, BJH Foundation, Greensboro and the Charlotte Jewish Federation.
Audrey was choir member at Temple Israel from 1959 to present, and committee member of the Charlotte United Way, Senior Wellness. She was involved with the following programs: the Speakers Bureau of the United Jewish Appeal, Braille Transcriber and Temple Israel Representative to Mecklenburg Ministries. She served on the Charlotte Community Relations Committee and Charlotte Nursing Home Advisory Committee. She was area director of the National Women’s League for Conservative Judaism and was Chairperson Judaica Creative Arts for the National Women’s League, Southern Region.
She traveled Extensively to Ethiopia, Ghana, Switzerland, China, Australia, New Zealand, Belize, England, Italy, and to Israel six times. Her interests were collecting, reading, volunteering, singing, public speaking and being with people everywhere.
Audrey is survived by her son, Craig Madans of Charlotte and daughter, Maxine Klenicki and husband Barry of Newton, MA; grandchildren: Alex Madans and wife Nancy, of Denver, CO, Ari Klenicki wife Erica, of Washington, DC, Rachel Kelnicki and Ryan McGeary of Seattle, WA, Marshall Cannon of Los Angeles, CA, Carolyn Van Buskirk and husband Prescott of Houston, TX; great-grandchildren: Allegra Lieb Madans, Samuel Klenicki, and Lawson and Barrett Van Buskirk.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at the Hebrew Cemetery in Charlotte.
