Barbara graduated from Women's College, now known as UNC Greensboro, with a teaching degree. She was married for 66 years to her high school sweetheart, the late Vernon McGimsey. She had a strong Christian faith and enjoyed entertaining and caring for her family.
She is survived by her three sons, George V. McGimsey III (Linda), Philip E. McGimsey, Sr. (Misty), and Joseph M. McGimsey; five grandchildren, Sarah Turnbull (Kevin), Matthew McGimsey (Sarah), Laura McGimsey (Joe Neagle), Daniel McGimsey (Sarah), Phil McGimsey, Jr. (Victoria); twelve great-grandchildren, Henry Turnbull, Charlotte Turnbull, Darby McGimsey, Kilian McGimsey, Cathryn McGimsey, Abigail McGimsey, Hayley McGimsey, Charlotte McGimsey, Hannah McGimsey, Levi McGimsey, Olivia McGimsey and Samuel McGimsey; and her sister, Kathy Atkinson (Tom) of Marion, NC.

A visitation will be held at McEwen Funeral Service-Pineville Chapel on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 10 am with a service to celebrate Barbara's life at 11am. Graveside service immediately following at Forest Lawn East in Matthews, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvary Church of Charlotte or Samaritan's Purse.
