Barbara M. Sessions

Barbara was born December 1st 1943 to Leo Joseph Martin Sr. and James Theodore Parson Martin, in Conway, SC.

Barbara was known for her passions for sewing, potting plants, cooking, watching Carolina basketball games, and spending time with family. She was always making a fresh pot of coffee. She was an avid QVC shopper and had anything and everything she could buy, including clothes and kitchen gadgets. Her vibrant spirit and generous heart will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Barbara and her older brother by 13 months had the most memories out of 5 kids of living on the Race Path/9th Ave in Conway and out at the Rollins Field in the Pawley Swamp Community, before they moved to Georgetown in 1951. She worked at the Strand Theater and would give the money she earned to her parents to help out.

Growing up, they lived on a farm, and she worked tobacco. She had a chicken named Hen Penny who would lay an egg under the sewing machine each day. She went to Winyah High School and won a home economics competition for sewing a dress. She was known for sewing Barbie doll clothes starting in 1st grade, as well as clothes for herself, daughter, and granddaughters. She also collected and tinkered with sewing machines.

In Georgetown she met and married Dewey Wesley Sessions on May 22, 1961. They traveled the world with his service in the Navy and the Air Force. Their daughter Christie Lynn Sessions was born while they were stationed in France. Barbara flew over on Halloween night while pregnant, and had their daughter in a French hospital while Dewey was out to sea. She would pack up Christie in a stroller, and take the bus all over, including Italy and Monte Carlo.

They lived all around the world, including Spain, England, Japan, and all over the states. They also took off in a motorhome while their daughter was in college, and ended up in Maui, Hawaii for a summer.

She and her daughter loved living in Madrid, Spain for 4 years. During that time, her mother was able to come visit, and they enjoyed showing her around.

Barbara was mostly a homemaker, but also worked various jobs such as in a nursing home, daycare, Belk, and the BX, or Base Exchange, on the base in Japan, while they were stationed in various places.

She came back home to help during her father’s battle with cancer in 1993 and her mother’s long decline from 1996-2011.

Barbara was tough as nails. If she put her mind to something she was going to find a way. If she had something to say you were probably going to hear it.

She always knew the details that helped tell a story. She could always tell you everything from her life, from what year it was and where they lived, to what the house or clothes looked like, and what was happening that day. She was the one to call with any questions of someone’s name, memories, and knowledge about everything. If she didn’t know something she was going to learn about it.

Surviving Barbara are her husband of 65 years, Dewey Wesley Sessions; her daughter, Christie Lynn Sessions Carver and son-in-law, David Carver; two granddaughters, Michelle and Traci Carver; three brothers, Joe Martin and his wife, Dolores, Grady Martin and his wife, Irene, and Roger Martin.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Wayne Martin and James Franklin "Frankie" Martin.
