

Born in Concord NC on January 31, 1931, Barbara was a daughter of Addie and JHL Abernethy. She was a graduate of Thomasboro High School and Kings College in Charlotte. She worked for the Charlotte News after graduation, as well as the Allison-Erwin Company.
After starting a family, Barbara was actively involved in volunteering, including various roles at her church, her childrens' schools and sports teams, as well as serving as a docent at the Hezekiah Alexander house and the Nancy Reid house.
Barbara was a true lady who loved taking care of her family and creating a warm, welcoming home. She was talented with needlework, was an excellent cook and baker, she loved crossword puzzles, antiquing, and growing flowers for vases throughout the house. Barbara was a big fan of Tar Heels basketball and loved almost every sport. While a resident of the Carriage Club for the past 4 years, she made many friends and enjoyed getting together for meals and other events.
Barbara was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Charlotte for over 60 years, serving on various committees, keeping the infant nursery and teaching Sunday School. She was a member of the UMW, and also helped in the church office.
Mrs. Whitehead is survived by her children, Kent Whitehead and wife, Gail, of Florence SC; Sue Bivens and husband, Tim of China Grove, NC; and Tommy Whitehead and wife, Elizabeth, of Waxhaw, NC. She is also survived by six cherished grandchildren who affectionately called her "Baba": Madeline Whitehead, Will and Meg Bivens, Emily, Addie and Katie Whitehead. In addition, she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband Howard, her parents, sister Patricia A. Edlund and sister Helon Sue Abernethy.
Her family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of Brookdale Carriage Club Providence, to Charlotte Hospice and to special caregivers with Blue Dot Cares for their genuine love and support, especially in the last few months.
A service celebrating Barbara's life will be held on Monday, August 9, 2021 at 11:00am at First United Methodist Church, 501 N. Tryon Street. The family will receive friends in the narthex following the service. Church parking is accessible from 9th Street. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Charlotte Hospice and Palliative Care or to First United Methodist Church.
